QUICK! Call your Accountant / Adviser, before it’s too late

Brisbane Business Accountant - woman provding financial advice

How many times have you heard that before? Probably never. But there it is. Life moves pretty fast. It seems everybody is too busy to stop and think. And that is a major problem. It’s far too easy to focus on what’s urgent, and forget about what’s important. Neglect is bad for your body, bad for your car, and bad for your teeth. It’s also bad for your business, and bad for your finances.

If you only see your accountant for end-of-year tax returns, you’re not getting the best value for your money. You have paid your accountant or adviser to get to know your financial position, and he is well positioned to advise about other financial matters, including business structuring, tax planning, insurances and wealth accumulation, retirement planning, business growth strategies …and more. First and most importantly, you need these strategies in place. Once you have them, you should be speaking with your accountant – or financial adviser – at least once a year to review them.

Following are some questions to ask yourself. If you don’t know the answers (or the answers worry you) then call your accountant or adviser – NOW.

  • How much tax are you going to pay this year?
  • What legitimate steps can you take to reduce your tax this year?
  • How will you pay your bills if you can’t work or 12 months? (or ever again?)
  • How would your family cope if you died unexpectedly?
  • How much money do you need to retire?
  • How can you earn a decent income in retirement and pay no tax?
  • What’s your business exit strategy?
  • What will you do if your business partner dies unexpectedly?

There are many other questions you should ask yourself on a regular basis. A good adviser knows all the right questions to ask, and will help you get the right answers.
